Hair Growth Medications

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as male or female pattern hair loss, is a hereditary condition that causes gradual hair thinning over time.

The two most common FDA-approved treatments for AGA are Finasteride (Propecia®) for men and Minoxidil (Rogaine®) for both men and women. Dutasteride (Proscar®) and Spironolactone (Aldactone®) [for women only] are other options, although they are prescribed off-label. Each medication works differently but requires consistent use to maintain results, and side effects are generally mild and rare.

Clinical trials—especially randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies—are considered the gold standard for determining whether a treatment is effective. These trials have confirmed the effectiveness of many AGA treatments.

It’s vital to maintain a good relationship with your doctor to discuss realistic expectations, treatment options, and possible side effects. Hair medications should be used for up to a year before assessing their effectiveness. Remember, stopping treatment will result in the loss of benefits, so continued use is essential to maintaining progress.
